Petition presented at Downing Street
Members of the Bangladesh Caterers' Association, the Ethnic Catering Alliance and Keith Vaz MP, have presented a joint letter of petition to Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, at Downing Street.
The petition presentation followed the successful Day of Action Rally led by Bangladesh Caterers' Association and the Ethnic Catering Alliance in Trafalgar Square where 10,000 supporters from the UK's Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani, Chinese and Turkish catering business communities gathered to protest against the new policies introduced by the Border and Immigration Agency.
The handing over of the petition to Downing Street precedes the debate on the immigration points based system, due to take place this week.
The petition detailed demands of the Ethnic Catering Alliance, calling on the Government to recognise the unique characteristic of ethnic catering in the UK and to put the occupations in these businesses on the Occupations Shortage List.
They also call for a stop to all disruptive Border and Immigration Agency actions and an urgent recognition of the industry as an area of skills shortage, with a relaxation of the rules to allow for urgent recruitment.
The Ethnic Catering Alliance also implores the Government to recognise the unique language characteristic of ethnic catering in the UK and that it work with the communities by investing in training programmes.
This would resolve long-term labour problems in British ethnic catering businesses and provide employment opportunities for local people.
The Ethnic Catering Alliance has further requested the Prime Minister to meet with them to discuss and implement a fairer system that does not further jeopardise or disrupt the UK's ethnic catering industry.

All the caterer in this Country either from ethnic community or not should start employing local people for their businesses and train them properly and also pay them fair wages.
If that is done there will be NO need to recruit people from abroad, and further more they will not have the shortages as they seems to claim.
Employing "cheap" labour is bad for catering business, there are plenty of good workers in this country. The language is a bad excuse to put to the Government.
