Cricket in Mexico?

Yasir Patel has forged a cricketing link in the unlikeliest of places.

At present Yasir is in Mexico and teaching maths at a bicultural school - Escuela de Lancaster AC (Lancaster) which is in the capital Mexico City.

A keen cricket fan it didn't take long for Yasir to set up his own team. But having done that he has realised that cricket in the country goes back well over 100 years.

"Mexico Cricket Club was founded in 1827!

Not many know the sport but some schools are promoting it to their students, like ours - we have a team, which I help to coach."

Yasir, of Blackburn who plays cricket for local clubs Harangam CC and Darwen CC and football for Queens Park Torpedoes and Blackburn United says interest in the sport is growing.

"Obviously football is the number one sport but we have people joining up from all walks of life and all abilities. We have two Mexicans in the team. They are students from the school aged 16 (twins!) and called Joel and Natan. In the league itself there is another Mexican called Arturo."

Yet, the bulk of the teams are made up of ex-pats and people from the sub-continent. "There are quite a few Indians here and most run businesses - a lot of them clothing businesses. There are 2000 Muslims in Mexico, 1000 in Mexico City and there is also a mosque. Through that I have met many Pakistanis too, as well as Algerian, Iranian, Canadians and an Arab"

"After the Twenty20 World Cup there was a lot of interest from the Indians who think that India is now the best team in the world." Yasir, a goalkeeper surprised us even more by telling us that in the football team he plays centre-back!

Must be his height...

My father has been a mexican diplomat to South Africa and as a kid I became close to the game of cricket, I would like to know where can I play it in Mexico City
