The incredible Masoom
A former Mr Asia and Mr Pakistan was in the North West recently to give his backing to a gym.
Masoom Butt, 34 was in Brierfield at the Bodies In Motion Gym based on Colne Road.
The gym has operated successfully as a community enterprise in the heart of Brierfield since 2005 and is open to everyone for free.
The Pakistani bodybuilder has notched up four tournament wins out of four and he's only been in the country for a month!
Masoom held the Mr Pakistan title in 1992 and the Mr Asia title a year later. He came fourth overall in 1993 when he competed in the Mr Universe competition. After a career break lasting nearly seven years he returned to the tournament circuit and was successful almost immediately.
He recently won the Pro-M Oscar, the Pendle Valley Mr International and the Mr Titan event in Hackney.
"It was difficult getting back into the routine but I'm enjoying every minute so far."
"I had to take a career break because I couldn't support my family and body building at this level takes a lot of effort, determination and time. I am thankful to Ian Chambers who has sponsored me and he has been very kind to me since I have been here."
Shahid Shabbir, Manager of the Bodies in Motion Gym told us, "It is great to have someone like Masoom here visiting the gym.
"He is a true role model for the youngsters. This gym aims to support young people to raise their self-esteem and so equip them better to take advantage of the education and training in the area."
"The gym is a gateway to sport and everyone of any fitness level is welcome to attend."
The gym currently operates across 13 double sessions per week, approximately 300 users drawn from all areas of the community make use of the facilities each week.
Masoom added, "I just want to say to young people that they should take advantage of the opportunities available to them.
"Their parents went through a lot of sacrifices so they could have a life here and they should make them proud."
He has also been overwhelmed by the support people have given him in the UK.
"I am truly humbled at some of the competitions I have been too. British people are very friendly and forthcoming and I have really taken to them."
Asif Yaqub of Nelson, a friend of Masoom, told us "It is quite amazing to go to some of the competitions.
"Just today we were in Wakefield and people were coming over and congratulating him and commending him.
"I felt so poud to tell them that this guy is from Pakistan!"
Next up for Masoom is the prestigious Caledonian Pro am which take place in Scotland.
And later this year he will be hoping to land top prize at the Amateur Mr Universe competition.
